Thank you for organizing the Final Reunion and Closeout of the 82nd Fighter Group Association. We are well and hope everyone is, too. We have decided it is too far to attend in these uncertain times.
My parents, Edward (1917-2010) and June (1921-2013) Huss brought us to the 82nd Reunion in Las Vegas, 2009. Dad and his brother Harold (1919-2011) were with the 97th Squadron. This is a picture of DAD’S PILLOW CASE. His journey started in Rochester, NY. Dad and his grandson, Clifford Imes V, put together a scrapbook of photos complete with names and donated it to the 82nd at this Reunion. His adventure included a ride on the Queen Mary (Curacoa tragedy), Rommel’s groups being put on the train, great pictures of the guns left behind, cooking for the group—coffee made in trash cans, gathering snow to make ice cream, bartering for fresh eggs with local people, and sponsoring a young man for confirmation in Italy. My parents made wonderful friends—visiting on vacation, dinners with locals, and letters and cards at the holidays.
We attended the Reunion in San Antonio on our own. Everyone was very welcoming! We had a wonderful time and learned so much about the Air Force, the 82nd members, and Texas. Thank you for the opportunity.
